2nd May 2024 Rest day in Burgos

Updated: 6 days ago

It was a great sleep in – got out of bed at 10.30 by which stage we were getting a little hungry. We checked the forecast as it was sunny outside, and it was 7 degrees, so we rugged up and headed off to find something to eat.  Nearby we found a little café where we grabbed some coffee, some toast and a pastry to share.  It was nice to be out of the wind and the cold.

Eventually we needed to brave the weather, so we headed out and into a cute little shop selling mementos and purchased a few T-shirts for the grandsons and a postcard.  We had decided we were going to have a room picnic later, so we went to a supermarket, but it ended up being an actual market with stalls for fish, meat, smallgoods and vegetables.  We stocked up on some bread, local bottled asparagus, cheese, ham, tomatoes, bananas and a couple of the local specialties on skewers (cheese, peppers, onions etc).

It was then off to find the local Correos to send the postcard to the boys in Melbourne and to post the T-shirts to our destination in Santiago de Compostela.  We were saved from going further to find some other supermarket items (protein bars etc) as we passed a little shop and managed to get what we needed from there.  It looked like the rain was going to start so we headed back to the room.

It was a great opportunity to just relax for a while and catch up on everything and watch the rain, and the hail, out of the window and towards the Cathedral.  We had originally planned on visiting the Cathedral later, but I didn’t want to put my boots back on until a walking day and my crocs would have allowed water in to wet my socks!  In short, we stayed in the room watching Spanish dubbed movies and later I made some bocadillos on the bathroom counter with all the delicious bits we had bought.  They were very tasty I must say!

We packed as much as possible before having a lovely long soak in the bath and then watching the light changing outside on the cathedral.  Such a beautiful view so I soaked it in knowing it will probably be the last time I see it.  I must admit to waking up a few times during the night just to see the cathedral - the lights highlighting the structures were turned off about 1am so I slept until the daylight started making an impact and I could photograph it once more.
